2017 Saia Scholarship Recipients

This year's recipients of Saia's $2,000 and $1,000 scholarships.

$2,000 Scholarship Winners

Kenechukwa Egbuonu
Grand Prairie, TX
Parent - DLS Dockworker Ilochukwu Egbuonu

Kenechukwa Egbuonu graduated earlier this year third in his class from South Grand Prairie High School with a GPA of 4.580. He is currently attending the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Outside of the many academic awards and accolades he has received during his academic career, Kenechukwa is described as “extremely well liked by all his peers” and as “friendly, compassionate, respectful and polite.”

Megan Knox
Los Angeles, CA
Parent – LAX City Driver Melvin Knox

Currently attending the University of California at Berkley, Megan Knox graduated from St. Mary’s Academy in May with a 4.38 GPA and was named her class’ valedictorian. One educator described Megan as “one of the most inspiring students (they’ve) ever encountered.” Outside of her academic achievements, Megan is credited for wanting to better serve the community by obtaining a medical degree so she can help the sick and underserved.

Tanner Krug
Corbin, KY
Parent – LEX Line Drive Norvin Krug

Tanner Krug graduated from Corbin High School with a 4.29 GPA and was accepted to Eastern Kentucky University where he plans on majoring in management/business. In addition to several other achievements, Tanner was a founding and influential member of the local chapter of the Student Technology Leadership Program. Tanner is described as someone who “consistently demonstrates a strong work ethic and dedication to success…”

Jasmine Marquez
Port Saint Lucie, FL
Parent – WPB Terminal Manager Juan Carlos Marquez, Sr.

Jasmine Marquez is currently enrolled at the University of Miami where she’ll study health sciences, pre-medical – after having already obtained her associate’s degree from Indian River State College while dually-enrolled in high school. She graduated from Treasure Coast High School with a 5.72 GPA. Along with her academic honors, Jasmine has donated her time to a drove of charity events and organizations. She is described as pleasant, tenacious, hard-working, extremely intelligent and humble.

Kaylee Richter
Kenner, LA
Parent – NOL City Driver Steuart Lulue

Now attending Southeastern Louisiana University where she plans on studying biology, Kaylee Richter graduated from Grace King High School as the salutatorian brandishing a 4.68 GPA. Even with a tremendous load of Advanced Placement courses, Kaylee is described as “a well-rounded individual who stayed involved in many extracurricular activities such as cheerleading, National Honor Society and the Student Council.”

Hailie Wrenn
Randleman, NC
Parent – GBO City Drive Gary Wrenn, Jr.

Hailie Wrenn graduated from Southeast Guilford High School with a GPA of 4.87. She was accepted into the Esther G. Maynor Honors College at the University of North Carolina at Pembroke where her major is pre-nursing. Her ultimate goal is to become a nurse anesthetist. A teacher described Hailie as “dependable, empathetic, self-motivated, honest and curious…” and as “exceptional in every way.”

Ariana Calvin
Laveen, AZ
Parent – PHX Line Driver Walter Greer

Described as someone who always challenged themselves academically, Ariana Calvin is currently a pre-public health major at the University of Arizona. She graduated from Betty Fairfax High School with a 4.326 GPA. While her academic achievements are numerous, Ariana says her heart is in community service. From feeding the homeless to mentoring children, she is described as a “dynamic and positive” individual who has a “vision of success for the future.”

Tonja Grimes
Crosby, TX
Spouse – HST Trailer Mechanic Justin Grimes

Tonja Grimes is a mother who wants her children to look at her academic achievements and know she always did her best. As a student at San Jacinto Community College, Tonja is studying health information management and because of her academic achievements, including a 3.87 GPA, has been accepted to the National Technical Honor Society. She has been described as “very motivated, intelligent, personable and professional.”

Quinn Pitre
Houma, LA
Parent – HGO Publications Specialist Gypsy Pitre

Currently attending Nicholls State University where he is studying business, Quinn Pitre plans to one day graduate with multiple degrees and secure a position in business and finance. Overcoming several challenges that impacted his academic opportunities, he graduated from Terrebonne High School earlier this year with a 3.5 GPA. His guidance counselor said Quinn doesn’t back down and doesn’t “quit when things get hard.”

Lindsey Smith
Lithia Springs, GA
Parent – ACO Regional Linehaul Dispatcher Rufus Smith

Lindsey Smith is currently a student at the University of Georgia where she is majoring in biological sciences. She graduated from Douglas County High School with a 3.95 GPA. In addition to her many academic accolades, including receiving her International Baccalaureate (IB) diploma, Lindsey has also given numerous hours to charitable outreach. She has volunteered at the Douglas County Pregnancy Resource Center and at assisted living facilities. Her IB instructor said Lindsey has a “can-do attitude, strong work ethic, and amazing positivity.”

Veronica Van Buren
Caldwell, ID
BGO Corporate Accounts Specialist

Veronica Van Buren is a corporate accounts specialist working at the BGO as well as a student at the Northwest Nazarene University where she is pursuing a master’s degree in counseling. Her ultimate goal is to start a group practice to serve persons with a low socio-economic status, the LBGTQ population and the Spanish-speaking community. She possesses a 3.7 GPA and has been named to the school’s Dean’s List. She is described by her professors and colleagues as “earnest, dependable, innovative and incredibly hardworking.”
