Physical Fitness is Achievable

Making time for physical activity can be difficult with our busy schedules. Being too tired, too far behind in our fitness to begin now, or too old are just some of the excuses we make. Whatever your barriers may be, the benefits of increasing your activity far outweigh the reasons not to. Regardless of your age, gender, or athletic ability, physical activity can greatly enrich your health and well-being.

Benefits of Physical Activity

Paired with a healthy diet, physical activity can:

  • Help you achieve and maintain a healthy weight
  • Prevent or delay the onset of chronic illnesses such as diabetes, heart disease, certain types of cancer, and high blood pressure
  • Improve mood, reduce stress, and increase energy
  • Help fight depression and anxiety
  • Improve sleep
  • Help you build and maintain healthy muscle and bone density through certain weight-bearing exercises, including jogging, tennis, and weight lifting

Experts recommend that adults get at least 30 minutes of moderate physical activity most days of the week.

How Much Energy Should You Exert?

These activities should increase your breathing rate and make it more difficult to talk, but you should still be able to carry on a conversation. If weight loss is your goal, include a healthy diet and aim for at least an hour of moderate to vigorous physical activity each day.

Everyone’s goals are different, and everyone starts at different fitness levels. Begin where you feel most confident and build upon that. Set realistic goals and take small steps to fit more movement into your daily life, such as taking the stairs instead of the elevator and walking to the grocery store instead of driving.

  1. Exercise at moderate intensity for at least 2.5 hours spread over the course of each week.
  2. Avoid periods of inactivity; some exercise at any level of intensity is better than none.
  3. At least twice a week, supplement aerobic exercise (cardio) with weight-bearing activities that strengthen all major muscle groups.

Physical fitness is attainable! Even with small changes, you can reap immense rewards that will pay off for years to come.
