Every driver shall complete an electronic vehicle inspection report (DVIR) at the end of each day’s work, or when equipment is released from a driver (i.e., swaps, meet points, etc.) on each piece of equipment the driver operated.

This post-trip inspection includes, but is not limited, to the following parts and accessories:  service brakes, including trailer brake connections; parking brakes; steering mechanism; lighting devices and reflectors; tires; horn; windshield wipers; rear vision mirrors; coupling devices; wheels and rims; emergency equipment; and any damages noted at the time of post-trip and reported to the terminal.

Properly completing a post-trip inspection reduces safety risks, minimizes downtime, and prolongs vehicle life. A proper post-trip inspection also helps out other drivers and benefits our customers' freight by ensuring a successful on-time departure for the next driver.

Maintenance cannot repair items they do not know exist

The DVIR process is simple and is the only true way to have a defect properly addressed. If it is not entered through the DVIR within Samsara, then our shops and maintenance vendors have no knowledge an item needs repair. The DVIR also:

  • Removes the need for paper and provides better record keeping
  • Provides consistent defects by using a pre-defined checklist
  • Eliminates lost documentation
  • Sends the DVIR instantly to the Saia maintenance system
FYI
When meeting a driver, allow your meet driver time to post-trip their equipment within Samsara. Claiming equipment you’re not in physical possession of will pull the equipment from the other driver.
